Slovenia in 7 Days: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary

A balanced, realistic route through Slovenia's capital, Alps, emerald rivers, caves and coast.

The question I hear most often from guests is: “How many days do I need for Slovenia?”

My answer is: at least seven. A week is enough to see all the main landscapes – the capital, the Alps, the emerald rivers, the karst caves and the sea – and still have time for a coffee in the sun. Because in Slovenia, that coffee is part of the experience.

Here's the itinerary I recommend to first-time visitors. It's balanced, realistic and built around short drives, so you spend your days enjoying places rather than sitting in the car.

Before you go

  • Arrival: Ljubljana has its own airport, and many travellers also fly into Venice, Trieste, Zagreb or Graz, all within a few hours' drive.
  • Car: For this itinerary, a car is essential. Many highlights are hard or impossible to reach by public transport.
  • E-vignette: You need an e-vignette to drive on Slovenian motorways. Buy it online on the official DARS website before you start driving.
  • Best time: Late May to September is ideal. The Vršič Pass is usually closed in winter and early spring, so check before you go.

More practical advice: my 10 tips for visiting Slovenia.

Day 1: Ljubljana

🛏️ Overnight: Ljubljana🚗 Driving: none

Start your journey in the capital. Ljubljana is small, green and easy to explore on foot, and its car-free old town makes it one of the most relaxed capitals in Europe.

How to spend the day:

  • Walk along the Ljubljanica river and cross the Triple Bridge to Prešeren Square.
  • Explore the Central Market and the colonnades designed by architect Jože Plečnik.
  • Take the funicular or walk up to Ljubljana Castle for the view.
  • Relax in Tivoli Park in the afternoon.
  • Have dinner by the river, where the whole city seems to gather on summer evenings.

Day 2: Logar Valley and the Solčava Panoramic Road

🛏️ Overnight: Ljubljana🚗 Driving: approx. 1 h 30 min each way

Today, trade the city for the mountains. The Logar Valley, in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, is one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Europe, with steep mountain walls, green meadows and traditional farms.

How to spend the day:

  • Walk or cycle to the Rinka waterfall at the end of the valley.
  • Have lunch at a local farm or inn, trying traditional mountain dishes.
  • On the way back, drive the Solčava Panoramic Road, with some of the best views in the whole region.

If you prefer a shorter drive, Velika Planina, with its herdsmen's huts, is a lovely alternative.

Day 3: Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge

🛏️ Overnight: Bohinj or Bled🚗 Driving: approx. 1 h from Ljubljana

Now it's time for the most famous place in Slovenia. Move to the Gorenjska region, where you'll spend the next two nights.

How to spend the day:

  • Start early at Vintgar Gorge, walking on wooden paths above the crystal-clear Radovna river.
  • Take a traditional pletna boat to Bled Island and ring the wishing bell.
  • Visit Bled Castle, perched on a cliff above the lake.
  • Try kremšnica, Bled's famous cream cake.
  • End the day at the Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica viewpoint for the classic view of the lake.

Day 4: Lake Bohinj, Savica waterfall and Vogel

🛏️ Overnight: Bohinj or Bled🚗 Driving: approx. 30 min from Bled

Bohinj is Bled's wilder, quieter neighbour, and many locals' favourite. It's the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia, set deep in Triglav National Park.

How to spend the day:

  • Walk to the Savica waterfall, one of the most famous waterfalls in Slovenia (about 20 minutes uphill on stone steps).
  • Take the cable car up to Vogel for breathtaking views over the lake and the Julian Alps.
  • Swim, kayak or paddle in the lake in summer.
  • Try local Bohinj cheese at a mountain dairy or village inn.

Day 5: Kranjska Gora, the Vršič Pass and the Soča Valley

🛏️ Overnight: Bovec or Kobarid🚗 Driving: approx. 2–3 hours in total, with many stops

This is one of the most scenic days of the whole trip.

How to spend the day:

  • Start the morning at Lake Jasna near Kranjska Gora, with its turquoise water and mountain backdrop.
  • Visit the Zelenci Nature Reserve, where emerald springs rise from the ground.
  • Drive over the Vršič Pass, the highest road pass in Slovenia, with its 50 hairpin bends and the little wooden Russian Chapel.
  • Descend into the Soča Valley and see the turquoise river at the Great Soča Gorge.
  • In the afternoon, visit the Kozjak waterfall near Kobarid, or try rafting or kayaking in Bovec.

If you're interested in history, the Kobarid Museum tells the story of the World War I battles fought in these mountains.

Day 6: Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle and the Karst

🛏️ Overnight: the Karst or the coast🚗 Driving: approx. 2 hours from Bovec or Kobarid

Today you'll discover a completely different Slovenia: the Karst, the region that gave its name to karst landscapes all over the world.

How to spend the day:

  • Visit Postojna Cave, where a small train takes you deep underground before you continue on foot through halls of stalactites and stalagmites.
  • Continue to Predjama Castle, built right into the mouth of a cave in a vertical cliff.
  • In the afternoon, taste Kras prosciutto (pršut) and teran, the region's deep red wine, at a local farm or wine cellar.
  • If time allows, visit the stone village of Štanjel or the Lipica Stud Farm, home of the Lipizzaner horses.

Prefer something wilder than Postojna? Visit the Škocjan Caves instead, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the largest known underground canyons in the world.

Day 7: Piran and the coast

🛏️ Overnight: Piran or the coast (or return to the airport)🚗 Driving: approx. 45 min from the Karst

End your week by the sea.

How to spend the day:

  • Explore Piran's narrow streets and elegant Tartini Square.
  • Climb up to St. George's Church or the town walls for views over the red rooftops and the Adriatic.
  • Swim in the sea, perhaps in the Strunjan Nature Reserve.
  • Visit the Sečovlje Salt Pans, where salt is still harvested the traditional way.
  • Finish with dinner by the sea at sunset – the perfect end to your Slovenian week.

From Piran, it's about 1 h 30 min back to Ljubljana, and a similar distance to Trieste or Venice-area airports.

Have more time?

If you can stay longer, Slovenia has so much more to offer:

  • 8–9 days: Add the Kolpa river and Bela krajina for swimming, canoeing and wine (read my Kolpa guide).
  • 9–10 days: Add Novo mesto, Kostanjevica na Krki and other hidden gems.
  • 10+ days: Add eastern Slovenia: Maribor, Ptuj and the Jeruzalem wine hills (see my guide to the best places to visit in Slovenia).

A few things I always tell my guests

  • Don't overplan. Distances look short, but mountain roads are slow and the views will make you stop.
  • Start early. Popular places are much quieter before 9 a.m.
  • Book ahead in summer, especially in Bled, Bohinj and on the coast.
  • Leave room for surprises. Some of the best moments happen at a village inn you didn't plan to visit.
