A road trip through Slovenia: the route a local would choose

Slovenia is small, but that doesn't mean you can tick it off in a day. Many foreign bloggers write about quick stops between Bled and Postojna. I live here, so let me suggest a route that lets you truly feel Slovenia – with less driving and more moments.

Day 1: Ljubljana, unhurried

Start in the capital. Stroll along the Ljubljanica river, over the Triple Bridge to the market and up to Ljubljana Castle. In the evening, pick one of the riverside restaurants.

Ljubljana is compact – you can walk everywhere. Leave the car at a P+R car park on the edge of town.

Day 2: Bled and Radovljica

Visit Bled early in the morning, before the tour buses arrive. Take a traditional pletna boat to the island, then hike up Mala Osojnica for the view you know from photos.

In the afternoon, pop over to nearby Radovljica – its old town and Beekeeping Museum are a gem many travellers miss.

Day 3: Bohinj and Savica waterfall

Bohinj is Bled's quieter, wilder sister. Walk or cycle around the lake, climb to Savica waterfall and take the cable car up to Vogel.

In Stara Fužina, taste the local Bohinj cheese called mohant.

Day 4: Over Vršič into the Soča Valley

Vršič Pass with its 50 hairpin bends is one of the most beautiful roads in the Alps (open in summer, often closed in winter). Stop at the Russian Chapel and at the top of the pass.

On the other side, the emerald Soča awaits: the Soča gorges, Kozjak waterfall and Kobarid. This is also the place for rafting or kayaking.

Day 5: Postojna, Predjama and Piran

On your way to the sea, visit Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, built into a cliff. In the afternoon, continue to Piran – a Venetian-style town with the most beautiful sunset on the coast.

Prefer not to drive or hunt for parking? We can explore this route together at your own pace – with me as your guide and photographer.
